Nintendo says that factors such as the upcoming launch of the OLED model and European exchange rates have contributed to the base model’s first price cut.

The Nintendo Switch has never lost its momentum since it came out over four years ago, and especially where sales are concerned, Nintendo’s popular hybrid system has only accelerated as time goes by. Given that continued and growing success, it is not surprising (though somewhat disappointing) that the Switch has seen zero price cuts – until now, that is.

Nintendo has confirmed that the hybrid system has now received its first price cut since its launch – though for the time being, it is limited to Europe and the UK only. Whether or not there will also be price cuts for other markets. In addition, this will only be applied to the basic Switch model, which will be sold at a new price of € 269.99 (down from € 329.99) in Europe and £ 259.99 (down from £ 279.99) at the UK.

In a statement i VGC, Nintendo confirmed that the price change was due to factors such as the launch of the Nintendo Switch OLED Model, and currency exchange rates in Europe.

“More than four and a half years after its first release, the Nintendo Switch continues to have strong sales momentum in Europe,” Nintendo said in its statement. “After careful consideration of a range of factors, including European currency exchange rates and the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, we decided that now was the appropriate time to change Nintendo Switch’s European trade price.

“Trade prices of the Nintendo Switch Lite and the upcoming Nintendo Switch Model – OLED are not affected. Retailers determine the final consumer price. As a guide, we recommend that consumers check with local retailers to find out their prices.

“We changed the price before launching the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model so that the price differences between each model in Nintendo’s own retail channel, My Nintendo Store, would be what Nintendo deems appropriate for its own shop. “
