Send a mouse on a journey against the odds and you melt me to jelly: American Tail, The Secret of Nimh, Redwall… they all have a place in my ‘80s heart, and they were all mighty tearjerkers. Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey came out last month and tugged on the same tear duct, and now we have Micetopia. Be nice to us, mice.
Micetopia is out now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and Switch.
This is the latest joint from Ratalaika Games (who surely picked it up for the rat/mouse puns), and it looks pretty darn good. It’s a platform Metroidvania in a pixelated style, so it’s not oozing originality, but the production value looks great. Your rodent hero moves with real grace, and the game is colourful and vibrant.
The story – again – isn’t going for a Golden Joystick. You’re a mouse who returns to their village, only to find that the villagers have all been captured. With the help of a village elder, you look to get them back. Bang, done. We told you it wasn’t necessarily original.
This is a budget take on a metroidvania, being £4.99, but it seems to have all the trimmings you’d want from a similar game. There are secrets to stumble across, bosses to defeat and a fair few bosses to overcome.
- * Metroidvania style exploration
- * Platform jumping and combat
- * Classic pixel art graphics and chiptune sound
Micetopia is out now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, starting at £4.99 from the Xbox Store. It’s also out on PS4, PS5 and Switch.. Keep an eye out for our full review of Micetopia in the days ahead.
