The Xbox Game Pass has been Microsoft’s ace in the hole since its launch a few years ago, and not only has it increased in importance, it’s very clear it will be at the center of Microsoft’s gaming experience for next year. Many have wondered if Sony will ever have something similar on PlayStation consoles — and a new report says it will actually happen. And it won’t be far away.

As reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Sony is working on a competitive gaming service currently called “Spartacus”. Set to launch in Spring 2022 for PS4 and PS5, the service will combine PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now installation services (with the label for the first one on hold), and add backwards compatibility in the mixture.

For a monthly fee, the service says it offers benefits to subscribers in three categories, although plans are not yet complete, according to the report. The first part will feature all the PlayStation Plus benefits, while the second part will feature a “huge” selection of PS4 games, with PS4 games added to the mix later. Eventually, the third division will offer games such as PlayStation Now, expanded demos for games, and a library of games from the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP.

There’s no word on whether games in any of these categories will be available in the cloud or special broadcasts similar to the Xbox Game Pass, if Sony has any plans for adding one more day to release how Microsoft does it in its own service.

In November 2020, when asked if Sony would have a subscription service to offer gamers like the Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said they would get something to publish in the future. Earlier this year, it was also reported that Sony was working on an Xbox Game Pass “counterpunch”.

That said, Sony also previously mentioned that the Game Pass model is not suitable for the type of games to be made and the general guideline to use when it comes to game development. Whether they have changed their minds or they plan to offer another type of subscription service remains to be seen — but if spring 2022 is exactly the time this service, which is now called, will begin. of Spartacus, then we should hear something official about it. it is not far off now.
